Story and Clark is a name that you may readily recognize if you hail from the mid-west, as the piano manufacturing company began in Chicago. Hampton L Story had his start selling pianos, and owning several music stores from Vermont to Chicago. He had a few partners and manufactured organs before beginning the Story and Clark Piano Manufacturing company with Melville Clark in Chicago in 1895. The very next year they opened factories in Europe and another factory in Grand Haven, MI in 1901.
The Story & Clark piano was very successful with it's innovations in the acoustic engineering of the upright pianos, and was also innovative in it's production of player pianos. The company thrived during the 1920's and 1930's and survived the Great Depression and WWII and was able to buy the Lowery organ company in 1963. It continued to manufacture both organs and pianos until 1993 when it was purchased by QRS Music, inc.
Today, Story & Clark pianos are still being made in Asia for the QRS company. All new pianos come with QRS technology.
